[code]Weapons 'rife in Turkish schools'
By Sarah Rainsford
BBC News, Turkey

A survey conducted by a Turkish parliamentary research commission has discovered that 6% of high school children carry a gun to class.

Among those asked, 15% said they carry a weapon of some sort, including knives or razor blades.

Many of them said they carried weapons to make them feel safe.

The survey questioned 26,000 children across the country. The commission was set up after a spate of violent attacks in Turkish schools hit the headlines.

This report found that one-in-seven 12 to 17 year olds in Turkey carry a weapon to school on a regular basis. Almost 6% of them carry a gun.

Most of those children told researchers from parliament that they don't feel safe without a weapon; others admitted they were influenced by their friends and by films.

'Macho, violent culture'

One of its members told the BBC she found that children were attracted to guns, because they were growing-up in a macho and violent culture.

It is illegal to buy a gun under the age of 18 in Turkey. Most of the children questioned said they took the weapons from home, as many of their fathers have a license.

The parliamentarians argue it is no good making schools like prisons - introducing metal detectors and body searches to address the problem.

They suggest schools need to work more closely with pupils and their families instead.

More than 500 people were killed by firearms in Istanbul alone last year. One in 20 of them were children.
